The one piece of advice I would offer is that no matter what kind of rod or reel you end with, it will not work as well unless you have the knowledge to use it. Take a course or hire a guide and learn the basic mechanics of the casting stroke and your rod (no matter what it is) will "work" much better. There are many inexpensive rods and reels. Try some rods out and see which ones work with your natural casting stroke. I also know that there are some very good combos that companies are coming out with that are inexpensive and decent quality (Ross, Echo etc.).
