I'm not sure what thread HunterDave uses. when I was actively skinning I would go to the local drug store with vet supplies and buy several packs of sutures. The sutures have the round needle attached already and are razor sharp for sewing through most any hide. There are different sizes too.
Even good to keep a couple packages of sutures in the emergency survival kit.
