I picked them all my life in Ontario, BC, and now Alberta. I always look for a hollow from the stem up to the cap, a hollow interior is a key so cut em in half. Seamless cap attachment, the cap moves directly into the stalk. Dad always said look for longer than wide so not short and squat.

Vepa's stem is usually filled with a cotton-like fluffy fibrous material that you won’t find in a true morel. If in doubt, throw it out.
