Personally I would not load much heavier the 150gr. bullets (Cup and core) unless you shots are under 150 yards or so. I made a bunch of brass for mine out of .308 brass and it works just fine but you will need a good case trimmer.
My Godfather hunted for 50+ years with a .300 Savage and feed a family of 7 quite well, with Deer, Elk and Moose.
As others said get close, place the bullet in the right location and you will have steak on the table.
