Go with the 3000, you get more drag capacity as well as extra line capacity. That rod will handle the extra line weight. I have the same rod and you can bend the tip all the way to the handle without it breaking. This was my pike rod for many years, a 3000 sized shimano spooled with 20 lbs powerPro. If you do get into salmon fishing, you may want to go up to a 4000 series sized reel and heavier line as they can put up a real fight.
