go to the store and look through at least three brands. I use Nikon
Make sure they are adjusted the same and if possible take them outside.
Out of the 3, one will look terrible, if you cannot tell teh difference between teh remaining 2 buy the least expensive
As for power a Max of 12 for hunting but a max pf 16 for dual hunting and target
Be sure to get a side adjustable parallax, it will clear up the view on 12x at longer ranges
