My go-to rifle has a 1-4x on it, I can make a 300 yard shot with it if I need to, though it rarely comes off of 1x. You can get that thing on target real fast, I don't shoot at running game, but I can easily keep them in the crosshairs and get a shot off the instant they pause. With a low power scope the gains are far greater than the losses IMO.
I shot that canoe hunt moose at first legal light with it set on 4x, and it was plenty bright.
