I have a 2-7x36 on a short 308 and a 1-5x30 ( 30mm tube) with illuminated dot in the reticle on my shorty 303 I love both for dark timber. Im also a fan of small red dots and peep sights with fiber optic front bead ( on all my levers) for timber hunting. My 2cents is give it a try. Go to the store later in the day and ask to try outside in lower light. For sub 200 yd hunting in timber I don't think you will be disappointed.
