We used 1/16" cable, about an 8-9" loop. Had some 5/64 coyote snares that we used but like the 1/16" better, easier to hide. Have not lost any to broken cable.

Trail sets are just snares set on your snowmobile trail where they like to walk, fence off the other side guiding them into the snare.
Bit of a pain resetting all the snares as you go down the trail. Tree sets just tramp down a trail off the main trail into the bush about 50 feet.
Hang a snare on the first good tree, we usually tie on some bait, lure, and a coke can hang on a string and curousity killed the cat.

I'll try to find some better pics of the trail sets.
