I first had my first flair up in my late 20s. Doc gave me indomethacin. That knocked the pain out of my toe but replaced it with a dull sickening ache in my gut. Most of the flair ups involved the big toe then the top of my foot and then ankle. Always red and a lot of heat at the site. The I started experiencing gout setting in on top of a sports injury.
For a long time I resisted full time daily medicine but gave in and went on daily Zyloprim or Allopurinol. No more flair ups, but when I tried to wean off the stuff it was not long before I paid the price. I have not tried to quit in the last 25 years but I have not experienced an attach in that time.
After I pass, I hope someone pours a whole bottle down my throat because that is the type of pain that may wake the dead.
