That being said, most of the more popular calibers have ballistics in the neighborhood of the 06, regardless of military heritage or not. Personally I prefer the .270, but freely admit that in the real world the difference doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
Pretty much anything in that 7-08 to 30-06 range will get the job done while maintaining recoil levels that most people can tolerate and shoot well. 06, .308, 280, 7x57, .338 Federal.... in the real world its all the same thing.
