This is absolutely true for zipper merging when a lane is ending. But when it is a lane dedicated for traveling straight (in this case the left lane) and the right is only for turning, it is a problem because now you potentially stop traffic heading in the intended direction.

So you become and ***** hole for the guys going straight.
