Wolves will stay as long as the eats are good or ranchers start shooting them. It usually takes many years for ungulate population to rebound. I have chart showing how the moose population in Alberta "tanks" when the wolf population "sky rockets".
This covers a 80 year period and each time shows moose population taking about 20 years to recover back to normal levels. Suspect deer population will be similar cycle.
