I got to go to a competition with a few of my mates where we were timed building a fire, a lean-to, compass orienteering course, and of course marksmanship.
Some things actually were better back in the day.

There are still camps like this out there. AHEIA runs one such camp at Alford Lake that is operational year round for groups to book it and have these experiences. They get quite a few school groups as well as cadets, JFW, and other outdoors groups that go there.
