I don't know a lot about beavers, though I did take a dead muskrat to 'show and tell' at school in about 1966. I kept forgetting to take it home and had to take it to the incinerator. I had it in a bread bag and had to hold it at arms length! Another day or two and it would have run beside me!
Your comment about the dog nearly getting gutted reminded me that male rabbits can literally castrate one another! I never would have believed this but I had to 'finish the job' when two male rabbits were housed together and one had large lacerations on his scrotum and at least one testis hanging 'by a thread'. I don't recall the status of the other testis. So, your comment about the beaver seems entirely believeable.
