These are older pics. I have since changed the rear attachment to a Velcro buttstock attachment point similar to ones designed for m16 style rifles.
With this carry method the rifle offsets the pack weight similar to carrying 2 5 gal pails instead of one. The gun hangs at an angle with the muzzle at your left knee( right hand shooter) and buttstock at your right arm pit. Simply shoulder the rifle and fire. No need to un-clip the gun. Since the gun is not wider than your body width as it hangs it doesn't interfere with trekking poles in any way.
