A 12 gauge gas operated gun will produce no more felt recoil than a typical 20 gauge O/U shooting 3" waterfowl loads. I shoot sub gauge SxS shotguns for my other hunting, but I do shoot a 12 gauge semi auto for geese, because I can still shoot 3" steel waterfowl loads without a lot of recoil.
