I think they are great
What's not to like. Excellent and cheap ammo, indestructible, hits what you aim it at. Always works.
As far as that deer story is concerned, I'd like to know where it was hit, not in the neck I'll bet. Lots of shots is no substitute for correct placement of the first shot.
I know a similar story about a moose, 5 shots from a 7 mm mag. and a waist deep tag alder swamp.
Practice with any rifle you intend to hunt with.
