17 if you are unconcerned about carnage & pieces of flying critter, .22 if you have any intention of eating the bird/animal after the shot. Both are a lot of fun to shoot, especially a 10/22 with a 25 shot clip

If I am shooting grouse or small game that I intend to eat, with any rifle, I will be using head shots, so the meat damage isn't an issue for me.
