I've got a couple thumbhole stock rifles and I gotta say that they definitely don't reduce felt recoil. They may distribute it a bit more between your shoulder and wrist but from my experience, I'd never reccommend one in a heavy magnum. Are you talking about the .338 Federal? It's actually a neck up .308. Personally, I'd go with the venerable .338WM if I was going that route. The .338-06 is one of those wildcats with a limited following. Defintely not in the league of the .338WM for performance.
