Pink spots are from the zinc in the brass. Basically it means the brass was exposed to an acid of some kind and has tarnished. You may be able to remove it, but i would be cautious if you are already noticing pitting.
I would go buy new brass anyway and its's cheap peace of mind for the $40-$50 it costs.
