Notes checked:
Federal poweshok 100 grain, average 2800ish fps
Winchester super x 100 grain, average 2840ish fps
Handloads, Hornady 100 grain interlock, h4350, (accuracy load was 38.6 grains, pressure at 39 grains, federal cases) average 2880fps
All from a 18” barrel.

To be fair I don’t know if I shot this one enough to break in the barrel? It might have picked up a little more speed with more firings, it might not have either.

It was slow for 243 standards but it was darned accurate.

If velocity and muzzle blast are irrelevant to you, the Hawkeye is more compact and a much nicer rifle. I’d say the only plus for the American is the detachable magazine, as carrying a loaded firearm in a utv / truck is a no no.
