Trapper I knew North of Peace River would usually shoot his moose with a 22 long rifle bullet in ribs, would just get close. He would go back to cabin, have a coffee then come back and dress the moose, he did not like to ruin to much meat.
A well placed shot from any rifle in the lungs will drop most large animals.
