Back when I worked for my Dad we fired one guy who was caught red-handed stealing from us, he was billing clients one amount and encouraging them leave the recipient portion of their cheque blank, he would then cash it in his name and submit us an invoice for a lower amount and hand in cash for that. This was apparent very quick as the cash coming in was unusual. This guy still used us as a reference!! The potential employer got the whole story about the theft & fraud. I wonder if he got hired....
