we never use a chunk as big as your fist, we would cut it into strips about an inch wide by 3-4 inches long. Always seemed to be more than enough for our Martin. And add a wing from a ruffie on a string to your cubby, it flutters in the wind and gets their attention. Not sure if it really made a difference or not but it definately didn't hurt our catch rate.
