My uncle taught me to gang set for the trap shy ones.

One trap in the normal location at the entrance to the cubby and four more, two off to either side of the cubby, next to the tree, and behind the tree.

My neighbour used an exposed trap and hanging bait setup for all Wolverine, even the trap shy ones. It worked as well as anything I've heard of.

I used conis. I invented a set that let the animal get to the bait without touching the trap or entering a cubby or other enclosure.

But I had my best success with a running pole setup with two conis on it.
