2012 3rd annual FALL PIF (Pay it Forward) thread- we need some ideas for a charity to sponsor.
Same as last year, lets brainstorm and put some ideas out as to who we would like to do our charity run for.
I will leave this thread up for 2 weeks, at which time I will take the top 5-10 organizations and run a poll. The winner will get a letter asking if they want to be the 2012 recipient. PLEASE just give one organization, but feel free to +1 if you see one you like, then we can get an idea of who to put in the poll. Lets make this one a success guys and gals, the last 2 have been worthwhile and fun. I will start the PIF thread after harvest, but before Christmas. |
Instead of a charity, has the idea been put forth of helping someone, as in one person in need?
I like the general ideas of charities, I really do, but always get concerned about how much money goes to run the charity vs goes into the cause. Just an idea. |
Stollery fund is always good!
I have some stuff for a new young hunter as well. Edited to add a disabled Vet as well, as per CaberTosser:) Cat |
I've Googled a bit, looking for a charity assisting Canadian veterans and/or their survivors. I've not been able to pin an exact one yet, but perhaps our numerous current and former soldiers on the board may be aware of some that have done good work and could ante in with a suggestion. Effective help is obviously the goal; there's no point in donating to some charity with good intentions, but poor budgeting & management.
Barring that, helping sick kids never feels bad. |

If the new moderators wish to become involved, that would be fine, they could certainly contact me with their ideas and opinions, I would absolutely be willing to help. If not, and I like this idea more; if and when the need arises for us to become a helping community in time of crisis or emergency, I think having a separate thread at time of need is more of a benefit and enjoys a higher success rate based on urgency, rather than putting aside a 'slush fund' as it were. But, definately an opinion to be considered for the poll. Thanks Mickey. |

I guess I should put my idea in. I was thinking we could maybe help out a lesser known or maybe under appreciated cause this year, the big ones get Millions and Billions yearly, while some of them fight for every dollar. Just my .02c.
Mine would be to donate to a Burn Victim Unit. I do not care at all where, as I feel burns are the ultimate in horrific pain and devastation that can be inflicted on a human being. |
Im with Ken on the burn unit. I had a burning alcohol stove spilt on me this summer. I was on fire. Lucky once the alcohol burned off(it burns pretty quick) the fire went out. With out boring all with the details, i lost a lot of skin and my right leg dont look so good anymore. Enough so that if i wear shorts everyone asks what happened. Some look away, so i dont wear shorts much to save the queasy folks.lol.
I know the pain which you speak of. Excruciating! |
I'm a big fan of supporting stars, it something that anyone at anytime may need. But if you are not in to big ones who already make millions, I guess stars is out.
|
It's up to everyone else, but I like the idea of one year for the Stollery, and the next for Alberta Childrens Hospital in Calgary, we have members here from across Ab, and anything to help sick kids, gets my cheque book out....

I may have replied wrong, I am sorry if my reply is construed that way. |

And I will always +1 for stollery |
I should add, I am not doing the Stollery Edmonton this year. Too much drama last year, they already know we are taking a break this year.

Valourplace is looking kind of like a military version of Ronald McDonald House.

I saw first hand what children's hospital and Ronald Mcdonald house do in Calgary. I'd vote for them |

Children's and RM houses are good ones too. Picking one would help though. |
We all support our troops, so how about WoundedWarriors.ca
Check out their website. http://woundedwarriors.ca/nc/home/ |
Since we all seem to love the outdoors and animals.
Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, or SCARS, where I adopted my two dogs from would benefit greatly from a charitable donation. Alot of time and effort is put into these animals and the place is run by volunteers as I understand it. Maybe we can help out our 4 legged friends this year. |
Calgary Children's Hospital, Valourplace and Ronald McDonald House seem to have enough support to be included in the poll.
|
Ken...
I also vote for Alberta Children's Hospital...and to be even more specific: the burn ward there. I have a great friend who is a nurse there and I know they could use the help. If a child is burned in the Calgary area, they are stabilized at the Foothills but are eventually moved for long-term care to ACH's burn ward. There is another reason why the ACH burn ward needs help but I won't post it publicly as I am personaly embarrased by this fact. |
Strongly Agree

+1 for helping an individual in need. The help would be tangible instead of just dumping the $$ into the collection pot and not knowing how it actually helped. Not saying that this does not help those organizations, but rather we would have more connection to results other than a fundraising goal. Either way, it makes the world a better place. I suppose we would need a process for identifying the individual though. |
+1 for SCARS, they do so much for animals, with little help from anyone through donations.
