My Christmas Present

2 Attachment(s)
I was given my dream ultralight set up for Christmas. I can't wait to try it out. Does anyone have any suggestions for what line and leader I should use. I'm fishing for trout, so I'm assuming a fluorocarbon leader. I will be doing pretty general all purpose fishing with this set up, so versatile is best!

Rod: Fenwick Elite Tech River Runner 6'9" Ultralight, Fast Action (is more of a medium/fast in reality)

Reel: Pflueger Supreme 25X

Nice rig. Depends where you fish. Im purely a trout fisherman living in the mountains. most guys would go with a 2-6 lbs test mono line. The places i fish are snag city so i go 8 or 10 depending on if ones on sale. I just pick up the red trilene its a flurocarbon i think and i spool the whole thing with it. Domt over think it its just line. Pay more attention to lure choice and lure manipulation.

Personally I would put a good 4 lb mono on it. Tectan would be my choice. Unless you are primarily fishing the bow.

But any superline(spiderwire, powerpro etc) would be good too. I would use a 6-10 lb super line.

I would throw some 10 lb power pro super slick on there and then tie on a 4-6 ft leader made of 8 lb fluorocarbon line. If you want lighter then 8 lb instead of downsizing I would get a spool of 8 lb fluorocarbon tippet and use that instead(only slightly larger then 4 lb line but stronger).

Keep in mind it's an ultra lite. Go 8lbs and then change out lighter leaders from 4-6lbs. Honestly for trout fishing in Alberta you don't need any more than 8lbs anyway. I mostly use 4lbs. Some say 10 lbs will do anything but you will catch more fish with 4lbs. Clear water trout are spooky. I experimented a lot to see if size line makes a difference and it for sure does

If you are talking braid the reason I suggest 10 lbs is because that is the lightest they make power pro slick. Power pro slick is far smoother and will cast farther then using other lighter weight braids(including regular power pro).

I'd get a decent braid in 4-6lb for the mainline. Then I'd run anything from 4-20lb fluoro leader depending on circumstances. This is pretty much what I run on my ultralight (Shimano CVS-60ULB 2-6lb and Symetre 50FL) and I've landed Walleye to 65cm and Pike to 85cm on it no worries. I go down to 4-6lb leader when fishing for trout. If I'm using a tiny lure, I'll put a 10lb bite leader on as well in case they swallow it right down.

Thanks for all the advice! I was thinking of going with the new Berkley Nanofil, has anyone had any luck with it? Or used it yet? From what I've read online it seems like good stuff.
