Beretta 686 Issue

Hi,

I bought this gun used about two years ago and on a few occasions while out hunting the firing pin does not seem either strike the shell properly or hard enough (not sure) or it fails to fire, almost seems like the safety is on but in fact is not. A lot of the times it will fire the bottom barrel but not the top.

Either way wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue or if you could recommend a good gun smith in the Calgary area to take a look at it?

Thanks in advance.

To save yourself a bit of time, call Rich and see if this is a common occurrence with the 686 ....https://www.colegun.com/.
AFIK, they share the same mechanism as the 682 series.

2 items;
Make sure you release the trigger fully after the first shot
Make sure ammo has enough recoil to cause the rebound to drop so second sear will engage trigger

Have you pulled the trigger group out and cleaned it?

Sounds like a dirty trigger mechanism.
Pull it apart and clean it yourself or call Les Myers in Calgary and have him do it. He doesn't just flush the action but instead, tears those guns down and cleans each and every piece. Pm me for his number if you want.

I second the deep cleaning suggestion

Client had a 35+ year old BL 4 in 20 gauge he just loves and it fit him like a glove, suddenly last year it started malfunctioning with misfires and sometimes did not cock. Had a friend completely tear it down and you would not believe what was in under the stock behind trigger assembly! dirt, dust, oil and tiny bits of plastic from the front of shells. Remove stock from shotgun and disassemble everything to clean.

It's far more common than many realize.

Almost all the o/u I have serviced over the years where the bottom barrel fires and the top does not is caused by :
1 human error , not releasing trigger 100%

2 Trying to shoot too light load or letting gun "free recoil "as to not allowing recoil to make rebound mechanism work.

3 broken firing pin

4worn firing pin and hammer

5 dirty firing pin tunnel or piled up firing pin return spring

6 last is usually an overall dirty gun

A good cleaning is certainly a good starting point. Best to start with that.

Thanks for the reply's, was hoping not to have to send it away to Ontario but rather find someone locally to do a good cleaning on it....I am not confident enough in messing around with the trigger/firing pin assembly.

Could someone provide me with contact details for a reliable gunsmith in the Calgary area?
