weight in back of your truck

How many of you put extra weight in the back of your truck for the winter. Was helping my neighbor an old farm boy put a heavy metal plate in the back of his truck for extra weight and thought I used to do that but have not since I got a 4 x 4 but he says it sure helps you from sliding on ice covered highways. Maybe I will get a couple of sandbags for extra weight and could use the sand if I got stuck somewhere.

Anything in the bed of a truck not strapped down can become a bullet
I just use real winter tires

vinny 11-04-2017 08:42 AM

Heavy metal plate when you get in an accident and come to a dead stop? Now its a guilletine!

That must kill your fuel mileage.

Please strap them down.
it respond to a rollover and we found several blocks in the field along the path of the truck.
One came through the back window and struck the drivers head.

How about putting a couple of rectangular hay bales in the box of the truck. Go to the local car wash and put the spray wand nozzle in the bales until they are saturated. They will freeze to the box which is much safer and then come springtime you can push them out of the box where you have permission to drop them. You could easily get them to a couple hundred pounds each with the weight of the water.

truck weights in box!

On the subject of truck weight for winter driving.

I go buy water softener salt. 20 kg plastic bags. weather proof. east to move around don't freeze.

BuckCuller 11-04-2017 10:18 AM

Winter weight.

We used lengths of inner tube full of sand.

How would that even be possible considering the mass, size and nothing to attach to? Not to mention the forces that would come into play during collision. Might slow them down at best.

In Brooks people put cigarette butts on them in parking lots and start a fire. Gotta love our transient population

I have a dozen blocks on a pallet, left over from a project that didn't get finished. I've got some 3/8 " cable and a turnbuckle kicking around. I was going to use the cable and buckle to strap the blocks to the pallet. Was going to use ratchet straps to tie the load into the box.

Not the best but better than nothing.

They are definitely strapped in. Received a ticket for it last year for having a unsecured load. I should have been strapping them down years ago.

Go to garage sale. Pick up 250lbs weights ($10-$50.00). Strap them to a pallet. Tie pallet down in truck. Good to go.

Shekka 11-04-2017 12:33 PM

I have a box that I built for my truck. 2 sheets osb, 2x4 sides. Fill with sand or gravel, put top on and strapped down to the box of the truck. Still have truck bed for use and lots of weight in the back.

jstubbs 11-04-2017 01:06 PM

I usually run a slip tank with some fuel in it for weight in the winter. Also helps avoid getting shafted when they jump the price up $.18/L overnight.

Puma 11-04-2017 05:26 PM

Huh

"I just kicker in the box when needed"

Yeah, but what do you use for weight in your truck ?

elkhunter11 11-04-2017 05:32 PM

A freshly cleaned cow moose really helped with traction when sns2, Kennedy and myself drove out of the field and onto the icy roads this afternoon.:)
