Counting points (whitetail) in Alberta
 

I'm a new hunter (this is my second season) and I just bagged my first whitetail buck. I'm quite proud of him. I worked my butt off making it happen. He's got a big thick neck and body, and what I personally think is a reasonable rack.

It seems different places count points differently. What is "lingo"here in Alberta? Mine has 3 points plus brow tines on each side. Is he a 3x3, a 4x4, a 6-point, an 8-point, or something else? Just want to make sure I'm speaking the proper language!

4 pointer or 4 * 4, I believe most guys I know would say 4 * 4. American's generally seem to tally the points and call it an 8 pointer.

Back in the day, when most western rednecks left school at age 14 having never got past grade 5, your buck would have been called a "3 point",,,, liklely cuz it never occurred to them that you could actually use two hands and include thumbs (brow tines) and fingers (points) when counting!!! :bad_boys_20:

On whitetail you count the brows as tines, Mule deer you do not as not all sport them.

American's add everything together, hence 8 point..

In Alberta, we call it a 4x4. In locations where large bucks are not very common, they would call it an 8 point.

3x3, but I hear more people in Alberta are calling that a 4x4.
Historically we used to count them as one would a mule deer where brow tines are usually short so generally not mentioned.
I believe that in Saskatchewan it would probably be a called a 4x4.
Any Riders fans on here, let me know if that is a true statement.
Just don't go south of the 49th of us and call it an 8 point.

Yup. You just can’t count brow tines on a Mule Deer when in a 4-point only season.

If a point meets the definition of a point though then it is still a point, regardless of where it is on the rack.

It wasn't until I started hunting with some of my eastern neighbours that I realized the difference.
I usually now say 3x3 plus brows now when we are swapping stories.

Count all the points, no air crap either, points, amount of times, tall and wide and amount of points or small or narrow or.......skinny, heavy.....just like our women:)

Anything you can hang your watch-band on - counts as a 'point' !

Which is another reason to wear a watch - instead of depending on your phone!

That's always been a 3 point in any conversation I have had over the past 40 years.

For what it's worth, his brow tines are at least 4 inches long. Not huge, but definitely not insignificant! I'm hesitant to post my "grip and grin" shot due to how some people react to that stuff these days... Maybe I'll post a pic of the euro once it's done.

I’d say post a pic for sure. There is nothing wrong with being happy and proud of your harvest no matter how the point conversation goes. In the end whether or not someone chooses to count the point doesnt really matter a hill of beans...

Yeah post it up. 😀. This is a hunting site and if you feel like it you should be able to post it here among your peers. I would call it a 4x4 BTW.

I never understood the whole confusion over counting points. Some guys say you don’t count the brow points but will count the tip of the beam as a point??? I would say the brow tine is more of a point than the main beam is if you want to get sticky about things. The proper name for the points on a deer is tine, where as the proper name for the main beam is beam, yet a guy will call the beam a point and a brow tine a nothing...... seems a little weird.

It’s a 4x4 with a total of 8 points imo.

Going by B&C ruling , the brow tines are counted on a white tail buck.
Total number of tines counted along with the main beam :)
