Rifle target shooting turns in to gopher and geese

We head out to test out some loads and sight in some rifles today. It’s kinda to windy to do that but we had some sun with that anyway, even though our target board kept getting blown over. It’s one of the MTM target stakes so nothing great to begin with.

We pack up and drive beside another piece of property that we have permission on and stumble across some gophers. They’re a little far for the 22’s, especially shooting right in to the wind so out comes the 243 that I had Gitrdun debarred for me.
I haven’t quite settled on a load for it, loading Sierra GameKings in 85 grains. But I had some Federal PowerShok 100 gran soft point factory ammo. Funny enough, they actually hit the same place.
Anyway, Chase, my son, gets out and we get him set up on a gopher, on October 9th, and he cartwheels a gopher at 112 yards. I see another one so I get set up on it and pull the trigger at 184 yards and that gopher dances about 2 feet in the air. Time to go home now.

On the way, we drive by another piece of property we have permission on and see some geese in an irrigation dugout. We decide we may be able to stalk up on these geese using the berm of the dugout as cover. So the three of us load up, walk across the field and around these geese. We get to within 15 yards and the first one flies, my buddy shoots and it goes down. He’s using my auto loader and gets his second shot off right after Chase and I take our first shot. I’m used to shooting my auto and I was using my pump and pulled the trigger again. OH CRAP, I didn’t pump it. I pump it, pull the trigger, down goes my second bird. I miss on the third shot but manage to see a total of 6 geese down, all of us taking 2.
My buddy has shot geese before, back home in northern B.C., but not here and not in 25 years. This was my first goose and with Chase just turning 12, this is his first goose too.

Overall, a great day in the field, dynamic planning all day long and success as well. I’m not sure whose smile is bigger, Chase’s for being successful or mine for being there with him being successful.

Wicked.

The gophers are really big right now where we have been seeing them.

We were surprised to see them at all but yeah, they were big for sure. Looking at a study from the U of L, it should be juvenile males we’re seeing now and not that uncommon. I imagine mor so because of how hot and dry it’s been.
