jts1 05-22-2010 09:01 PM

Winter killed... Cant see it there is plenty of water there and we iced fished it a lot this winter.

calgarygringo 05-22-2010 09:02 PM

Heard the same

I heard it was a bad winter as well. Not many survivors from this nasty winter:rolleye2:

ArtVandelay 05-22-2010 10:47 PM

I'm a beginner so it's hard for me to say one way or the other. I caught between 20 and 30 Walleye today and would have been well over 50 if I had landed everything I hooked. I even managed a Pike. The boats next to me were doing better. A 10-year-old out fished me 3 or 4 to 1! We marked lots of fish on the finder. The thing was lit up like a Christmas tree a lot of the day.

Goater 05-22-2010 10:55 PM

ArtVandelay- Thats really bad winter kill ---so nobody waste their time going out there.:shark:

ArtVandelay 05-22-2010 11:07 PM

I hear ya...I'm not going back there tomorrow morning at all!

Well I may need to rip out there tomorrow and see for myself. There were only like 4 million fish in it.

Gillfisher 05-23-2010 06:58 AM

Not knowing a thing about walleye fishing, can a guy use a fly rod on these things?
If so how do you do it?

Jamie

goldscud 05-23-2010 03:04 PM

It was a bad winter so save your fuel and not bother going there. It looks like Chestermere has been producing lots of big Pike this spring !!!! :scared0018:

Dodger.

Gillfisher 05-23-2010 06:08 PM

It was slow for us today we only boated 6 fish. I was pretty busy with my sons friend as he was basically on his first fishing trip so I was not able to get a lot of fishing in myself.

Weather was nice then it was cold & windy we also got caught in a squall and got wet. I was tracking a lot of fish on my fish finder before my d cell batteries finally went dead.

There were a fair # of boats on the water as well as lots of people on the dock at the launch & it looked like everyone was catching fish.

Had a pretty good day out there, caught a bunch of walleyes and a couple pike, but the walleye were actually bigger than the pike..lol

Nice are the walleye finally getting a bit bigger and fatter in their?

baitfisher83 05-23-2010 07:08 PM

sort of, not really that fat but I think we caught a couple 16 or 17 inchers

ArtVandelay 05-23-2010 07:18 PM

Are there big Pike in there? If there are little Pike there must be big females there, no?

how do you get to pcr from calgary? is there any decent shore fishing worth the drive?

ArtVandelay 05-23-2010 07:32 PM

Plenty of shore fishing at the boat launch and all around the bridge. Head to Stavely, turn right.

Yes Jamie, you can catch the walleye on a fly rod. As Goldscud said use clousers or minnow patterns. I found black/white, green/white or red/white clousers work great there. I use a type 6 full sink line to get it down.

I think Jts1 forgets the day that him myself and a buddy spent on the water there. We got quite a few on the fly.

Have atter. I should be there sometime Monday later in the afternoon or early evening. Taking my son out before he takes off to Europe in a couple weeks. A good buddy of his has never ever been fishing, so we are going to take him to Chain Lake for some rainbows, then over to PCR for some walleye.

Pretty cool markings on that little guy. Got 2 like that 2 PCR yesterday, along with a bunch of 'eyes; all on the fly rod. Had one clean bite-off that I like to believe was a ginormous pike. Fishing was pretty slow compared to this time last year; water is a fair bit higher- couldn't wade nearly as far.
Still fun, though!:sHa_shakeshout:

I have to ask . . . what did you catch it on?

WayneChristie 05-24-2010 04:58 PM

a piece of smelt on a jig, both times.

Spudnut 05-24-2010 08:30 PM

Great day for me today at PCR - took my kids for the first time. Landed 36 walleye and lost as many. My kids were going crazy and I didn't get a moment to sit down. Also met some great people.
