Anyone have a silver lab?
I'm looking at getting another bird dog/ family pet, I mostly hunt upland birds. I have a 9 year old chocolate lab who is a awesome bird dog and also really easy going around no home, but as she is getting a little older I'm looking for a new pup. Just trying to see if anyone has a sliver lab and where they came from, the found a few breeders around Edmonton but haven't called yet. Thanks for your input

Mine came from the U.S. if I was to look for another I would call Smokin gun labs. They are in Raymond or Magrath A.B

If you want anymore info you can PM me. I know a lot of the Silver pups I found in Alberta and even BC, when I was looking, originally where related to their dogs. http://www.smokingunlabs.com/ Gunner 10 Months http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps3utcuing.jpg Gunner Pup http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/l...psqyviv1ap.jpg Jim |

Our lab flint is about 9 now, got him from an outfit up around Sundre, second lab from them.
Really been a fantastic silver . Sorry it's been awhile but could track down name if need be. First dog in a long time that hasn't cost 2k a year in vet bills. Lol. |

they can come in quite a few different shades all in the same litter just like a white boxer the colour don't make them any better or worse then any other its just the breed has kept up a standard and now the genetics of different shades are showing up more and more nothing wrong with them at all , I like the difference especially the lighter or white ones, I think a white one would be great to have in spring snow goose season I just came across that read and thought it was interesting, and thought I would share it that all my intention was, wasn't to knock them down sorry if I offended you |

In the end do your research and reach your own conclusion. Please note that silvers didn't appear until the 1950's......this is a massive red flag.

As one of those "purists"
You can buy pay for and train whatever you want. Your research can be based on suitability for purpose trainability or color. You will be happy with what you buy if you get what you researched so if silver is what you want go for it. dogs bred for color give you color, dogs bread for ability give you reasonably predictable traits. Your money your decision.

I knew a guy who tried to make a dune buggy from a unicycle.
Just sayin'.:) BTW. I trained two silvers for different clients. both have blacks now. |

You can teach a Rottweiler to retrieve, but it is a lot easier to buy a Lab. If you want a silver coloured dog do your research and best of luck to you. Hopefully you can teach it to hunt well enough for what you want.

If your going to have to train it anyway you may as well like looking at it. The good part is your wife will understand that logic.

We have a red fox version...2 years old now and by far and away the greatest dog I've ever had. We've had many types of purebreds, and mutts. He was the runt of the litter, and we're just fine with that. #1 priority/hope for us with a lab puppy was that he'd be an awesome family dog. Bonus if he was able to grasp some upland and duck hunting. Our guy was never trained, either than what I tried to teach him through some videos I watched. We did one obedience class, involving the wife. He's a champ with waterfowl. He's Ok with upland, but not even close to pointing. He'll retrieve anything and everything. Most important: he's laying beside us on the couch and bed every night. Rarely barks, amazing with kids, and smart as all hell. If I pull the camo and guns out, he stares a hole through me until we get in the truck. Apologies for the long reply, but I'm in the group of people who couldn't care what colour my lab is. He's not going to the Westminister Dog Show @ MSG any time soon. |

As soon as a breed is bred for color (or any other single trait), other traits will more than likely suffer. I'm not talking just Labs here, but any breed. A breeder that understands what he/she is doing will look at the whole dog (temperament, conformation, intelligence, natural instincts, etc.) and will base their decision on breeding based on all aspects of the dogs being considered for breeding. Color is by far the least important factor when breeding dogs. Anyone considering getting a dog has to think it through. You'll be living with the dog for hopefully 12 to 14 years or so. A healthy dog that has a sound temperament, is intelligent and eager to place, has the instincts to do what it was bred for, and has the conformation to work far outweighs the color of the hair it grows.....

Lab colours
It's a proven fact that white labs and fox red labs are purebred. They are a form of yellow lab. Any other "off color" has other breeding mixed into ancestry
|
Ckc
Won't be registering any silver or charcoal labs with CKC
|
Smoking Gun Labs
Ever questioned why the website doesn't post the pedigree of the dogs ?
