Ducks, ducks and more ducks
For about 10 days now on my work commute to Edmonton I have been seeing so many ducks. I am talking literally hundreds upon hundreds, some on ground, many flocks in the air too, single fliers in the same area as well.
This is just along highway 28 north before the turnout for Morinville. They are there now every single day. Would these birds be already on their spring migration north? I don’t think I have ever seen anything like this so early in a year. Mid January seems crazy to me to be talking spring as we barely had any winter this season :scared0015::scared0015::scared0015: |
I seen them out on that field on the east side of 28, kind of looked and thought wth. They were dug in the snow and eating the left over grain. I'm thinking they didnt fly south and must have been staying around the north sask river. After that cold snap they probably thought they should have went south. Lol

Big flock of Starlings buzzing around Sylvan today. Don't know if they're coming or going.

I have to believe they're local ducks never did go south. Hope they avoid avian botulism or something similar

I've been seeing ducks right in edmonton the last few winters. Where 170 st crosses the train tracks just north of yellowhead is a common spot. I assume they roost on the river and eat grain off the tracks. Not sure how they survive the -35 though. Tough little things.

Got to be locals that have open water and never went south, as was the case I believe with the geese that I posted about on another thread, a couple weeks ago when it was -40 and something like -55 wind chill I saw about 500 or more geese in 3 flocks heading south, they were high and definitely migrating.

More birds than i have ever seen .Hanging around every year, especially Canada geese.I have had robins in my yard all winter, thats a first .Calgary i usually see the odd snow owl & bald eagle. Not so this year.More raven's & crows. They follow the geese & ducks,to the fields.where they feed on some of the dead birds.I think, the birds are so concentrated on the river, they are more susceptble to disease

I thought this was going to be another hockey thread. :)
