Looking for feedback on pistol calibers. If you could only have one pistol or one caliber, what would it be, and why? I personally believe that the 9mm is the best round, because of its effective range, wide variety of ammo, and low recoil!
Reason why I posted this thread is because I am thinking of buying a couple of pistols as gifts for some family members, and any advise or feedback would be appreciated!

I would choose a 22lr, as we can't hunt with handguns, and a 22lr is cheap to shoot, and punches holes in paper as well as anything else.

Go 9mm, if you ever want to get into any of the shooting sports such as IPSC, USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, three gun (all growing rapidly in AB) it will serve you well for all of those sports.

I have a CZ 75B SA in 9mm that I truly love to shoot. I got rid of my Glock in favour of the CZ and may also get rid of my Sig P226 because of the CZ. A .22 lr is cheap to shoot, but a 9mm just adds that much more to the whole experience. Did the 5 stage course of fire we do at work with a .22 and I felt "silly". Anyway, to each his own. My vote goes to the 9mm.

Unless they are very experienced and good pistol shooters buy them 22lr as well for practice.
I am shooting pistols for 30 plus years and still practice to shoot every time at range about 300 shots with 22lr and 100 of 9mm(and other calibers) and every time after 400th round learn something new-400 rounds of 9mm every time would be a bit expensive for me.

9mm for me. Eepecially with all the pistol calibre carbines that utilize my Glock mags too. And 1000 rounds can be had for under $300.

Practise / girl loads for plinking and practise

Full power for satisfaction / thrill

Retrieving brass is easy

And the side benefit of watching the Dirty Harry movies never get old , plus spouting lines when at the range. Lol

45-70... Go big or stay home.

I fell its sort of a trifecta arrangement.

1. .22 rimfire, action type of your choice.
2. 9x19 or .40 self loader
3. Large bore wheel gun (.44-.45 cal)

Pretty much agree, except for the order. If only one, I'd recommend a

1. 9mm - available, reasonable recoil, inexpensive and enough power to shoot steel, compete, etc. If only one, this is it.
2. 22lr. For price, availability, fun, and luring newbies to the dark side :sHa_shakeshout: a 22lr self-loader or revolver can't be beat. Can get in a form that matches your 9mm (i.e. M&P), a conversion kit for your auto (Glock, Sig), or one of the classics like a Ruger Mark IV.
3. Wheel gun in 357, 44, 45LC etc. If that's your bag.

When we go to the range, we shoot 22, 9mm, and 40. The 40 hardly gets shot at all, its all 9mm and 22 (in that order). I have this irrational craving for a 10mm, but don't feel 1mm bigger holes in paper justifies the expense for me. When I want something different, I've rented/borrowed and realized that my 9 mm is great. Only other caliber I'd consider would be 45ACP - while I prefer Sigs, I shoot Glock 21's astonishly well.

PS. When you make up your mind, please post and let us know what you went with. Have 3 kids now, still adjusting to not having bachelor funding for my hobbies :). I rely on you guys!!!

9mm Parabellum however I have considered a .40 S&W.

This is about a close to the truth as you can get. Why worry about any other calibers? Sure don't want to see any more illegal handguns on the "street." And that's what they are if you use them anyplace but an approved range.

The 9mm isn't my favorite cartridge, I really like shooting .45 ACP and .357 and .44 magnums....and my .41 magnum, and my .40 S&W....but if I could only have one I guess it would be the 9mm. Cheap to shoot, but still a center fire, and the Sigs must be fed. .22 is fine and cheap too, but just not the same as a centerfire. The complete lack of any recoil is disheartening after a while.

I have a small selection of firearms that use 9mm. Little recoil. Cheap. Wouldn't mind a 45acp but I need to sell some others first.

Carried a 9mm .45acp .357mag and currently a .40 for work. I've owned all the caliber since and I've gotten rid of all of them except the 9mm and .45acp. Personally my ccw is a 9mm as the new technology in ammo has fixed the shortcomings they had back when the FBI switched to the 10mm then .40. Now they are going back to the 9mm.

Leaning towards twin Glock 17s, they are for my two sons, and available in different colors! Since I will have them in my possession, they will be easy for them to identify!

Great plan! The sig 320, M&P are nice as well. If you're going to surprise them, go with the Glock - if you decide to let them pick them out, they can pick out whichever feels best in their hands. Many of the modern striker fired are really nice - PPQ, etc.

For availability in different colors and all around great handguns, twin 17 or 19's would be hard to beat.

Since they all can punch holes in paper, it's more about which model you like. If you're into 1911s, of course you want to shoot 45 acp.

I have to say, having shot most I always come back to .357 mag & .38 spl.

Lowest cost for reloading and I can also shoot both in my carbine.

Even thinking about selling off my nine.

357 mag It is a very versatile cartridge, and can be used with success for self-defense, plinking, hunting, or target shooting. Revolvers in .357 Magnum caliber have the significant advantage of also being able to fire .38 Special ammunition, with its lower cost, recoil, noise, and muzzle flash.

The above statement is so true............ 45 all the way!

Sort of depends on your expectations...

-just planning to shoot holes in paper
-want a defensive man-stopper
-want the above for the upcoming zombie apocalypse, where long-term reliability and ammo availability will also be a factor.

If you are doing high volume shooting in centre fire, I'd vote 9mm. If you ever decide to shoot in some kind of match whether it is just for fun or serious, you will forever be chasing your brass before someone else gets your precious metal. No one cares so much about 9mm brass and you can usually find lots of it that a lot of people don't even bother to pick up.

I have a couple of .22lr pistols but the lack of recoil somehow leaves me less than satisfied for some reason.......
