Arbor press?
I’m thinking of going to L.E. Wilson seaters and am looking at an arbor press. Looked at the Sinclair and K&M but am wondering if I could get into something cheaper by buying up here. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When I started using Wilson In-Line seaters, I bought this one from Busy Bee Tools. I think I ordered it online and had it delivered to their north Edm store. It was on sale and cost about $75.00 at the time.

Thanks.

I should add ... when I purchased the Wilson in-lines, I tried two types...the stainless units with a micrometer top ... and the “regular”. If you look at the picture, a micrometer model is on the press, and a standard is behind to the right. I recommend the one with the micrometer top as it is much easier to use....especially when tinkering with different bullets.

Cheap is my middle name.I made this for my Wilson dies for BR cartridges,7/8-14 bolt shortened and faced off, drilled, tapped and Loctited a 1/2'' bolt into the top for ease of threading into press.Doing this again I would turn the bolt head to a thinner dimension, but this works. Screw it in from the under side of my Rockchucker ,remove the shell holder from the ram, hold the die with the base on top of the ram(as shown in 260's image) and raise the ram,die to contact base of bolt head. Once I pick up enough range brass and smelt them into ingots for the scrap dealer,:)I'd consider the 21st. Century Arbor press. Although Sinclair runs package deals some times for Arbor press's and Wilson dies. The Bald Eagle has been discontinued for a while now. |
^ heck of an idea. Quick and cheap.

Sinclair's is 109.99usd so about $150cad, plus duties shipping etc

The frame top is threaded 1 ¼”x12, and comes with a hard bushing for 7/8”x14. IMHO, they are a VERY good design, and have a 4.5” tall opening that will handle seating long bullets in long cases (like 338LM & 50BMG) and Redding Comp seaters with fully guided case holders. (The RCBS classic has a 1” OD ram and 3 5/8” high opening; the RCBS Supreme has a 1” OD ram and 4 ¼” high opening) I like the CC well enough to sell all my Lyman and RCBS presses and purchase several CC, which I have fixed to my work station and mounted on flat plates for portable use clamped to any solid surface. I turned several custom ram heads for Wilson dies and other tasks. The custom ram heads have different lengths and head shapes. A 2” dia flat surface is handy for holding lead muffins for hardness testing. I made the ram heads in various lengths to best position the available leverage. A true arbor press will have more consistent leverage throughout its stroke, but I suspect my setup has more force available in a smaller area of its total stroke. I have faced both ends of 7/8”x14 & 1 ¼”x12 gr8 bolts to thread into the top frame of the press. Similar gr8 bolts were bored for specific needs like punching BP wads and push through boolit sizing. A lathe is a very handy tool. Good Luck, YMMV. |

Wilson also makes Microtop dies for a standard press but I like their inline's,in a pinch you can also seat bullets by hand using them. In the end though ,an Arbor press is more convenient. Quote:

https://www.forsterproducts.com/prod...t-seater-dies/ https://www.brownells.com/reloading/...aspx?rrec=true Redding Comp seaters https://www.redding-reloading.com/on...et-seating-die https://www.brownells.com/reloading/...prod38694.aspx and Redding Comp bushing neck dies are very similar to the Forster BR as all use a sliding chamber to positively align the case and bullet. (not your typical 'hunter class' NK die). https://www.brownells.com/reloading/...rod103416.aspx (PS, my recommendation is a Forster BR or Redding Comp seater, with a Lee Collet Neck die (which also has a sliding case alignment system), and Redding body die & Comp shell holder set.) Good Luck, YMMV. |

But this takes it off the rail from the OP of Arbor press's. Thanks for the suggestions though. |

Seems like I'm going to Sinclair, the simplest solution lol

K&M might be worth a look.

Just loaded some 6 BR. rounds with the Sinclair unit I got from 6.5 Shooter,it sure gives you a much nicer feel of the bullet seating with a better sense of neck tension.
A very smooth running piece of kit, quite a difference from a single stage press in terms of "feel" in bullet seating. I'm sure the K&M is a quality press ,most of their tools are top of the line. The 21st. Century standard press also with both being in the same price range. I own 21st. Century tooling,it doesn't get much better in terms of quality and design. http://www.xxicsi.com/arbor-press.html |
