Guy gets mauled (sow defending her cubs), no help or cell service, drives himself to hospital-has to ring buzzer for them to let him in. Glad he's going to be ok.

I’m usually really sorry these things happen to people, but after reading this story.......... I’ll leave it at that.

Summed it up right there, could have been a lot worse.

Love the last line about dropping his guard in grizzly country. Also read another article pointing out the dangers of having fruit trees, and that certainly played a huge part in this one.

Yup. Completely agree. That bear has now learned no bad comes from attacking people or being near them. I HOPE the animals move far off as the next encounter could go pretty horribly for the next 'people'.

It's just going to happen more often now with the way things are going in BC and in Alberta. Sad people have to get hurt but we have to save the Grizz ya know because there are so few. The Bio's said so so it must be true.....

There's a grizz in the backyard so he grabbed his cell phone with no signal and went to investigate? How about a 12 ga. with bangers and rubber bullets backed up by a few slugs.

2x.. Bio’s are a joke. This is going to happen more and more with no hunting seasons in both provinces. Bears have no fear of humans without a hunting season.

If anything it knocks down the population in areas that need a little thinning and where humans are present more often. Kananaskis for instance needs some thinning....

The guy was chewed up on his doorstep. I would say this one is on the bear.

Its unfortunate this happened, and buddy likely knew better but had a lapse in judgement, but fruit tree in the back yard, alone, no cell service/landline, confronts, possibly surprises, a bear in spring/early summer, at least he didn't have garbage in the backyard. Would you have sympathy for someone involved in an accident driving the wrong way on Hwy 2?

Stop the traffic on the roads. This things happen more often.

Well, easy to criticize, but around here, where there are not supposed to be any bears, some people have gotten some unpleasant surprises.

Around here yes, but if I’m not mistaken this took place in the heart of bear country. Hell, he even seen the bears there the evening prior to the attack. When he heard the sounds in his yard what the heck did he think was gona be there.

I totally agree. I think it is easy to grow complacent when you have daily contact with bears and lose the fear. This fellow seemed to take full responsibility for his actions and I respect that.

No, cub fell out of a fruit tree after branch snapped, sow see's a human being-bad circumstance for a person to be in knowing what we know about a momma grizzly bear and cubs.

In the Bush you are correct. In our yard, no. Bears need to be taught to avoid humans. Which includes hanging out in the back yard. She is teaching her young that it’s normal to interact with humans. It’s not.

I hear ya TM, but this is Bella Coola (bear central) not Camrose. Maybe they need to look at removing attractants like fruit trees much like Canmore does (major wildlife corridor)?

Yes I’m aware of bellacoola. Just the fact that he scared them off and they returned right away doesn’t sit well.

Article states he rents the place, so removing the fruit trees makes that a non starter.

Agree with the first part of your response Phil....there are going to be more incidents occur!! Guaren-&$#*ing-teed!!!!
But you're wrong as far as the BC bio's part.....they've always deemed sustainable numbers of grizzly to hunt!!
It was weak kneed politicians looking for support and gave in to emotional pressure!! Laurel and Hardy over here running the show have stated this!!
Feel bad for the bio's in this case......hard core science.....trumped by feelings!!

Yup you probably are right on thinking that way. I just got a hard on for Bio's in Alberta after seeing what is going on with Predator Managment or lack there of..... And a handful of other reasons.
