Black Bear Baiting Info & Grizzly Bear Tutorial & Quiz

Hey everybody,

Alberta's Provincial Carnivore Specialist, Nathan Webb, has asked me to post this information here regarding black bear baiting and grizzly bears. If you are a black bear hunter, please read the following:

The following link contains some general information on black bear baiting, as well as maps of WMUs with only some portions open to baiting. Previously, hunters had to go to their local Fish & Wildlife office to determine where these boundaries were: http://www.mywildalberta.com/Hunting/GameSpecies/BlackBearBaiting.aspx

This link contains information on how to distinguish black bears from grizzly bears, including a tutorial and a quiz (the links to these components are on the left-hand side of the page). Grizzly bears can occasionally be found throughout black bear range, and nearly every year there are cases of hunters mistakenly shooting grizzly bears: http://www.srd.alberta.ca/RecreationPublicUse/AlbertaBearSmart/KnowYourBears/Default.aspx

Yikes looks like my baiting loacations are still open but with half the wmu shut down I can imagine it will be a little crazy out there even worse this year.

I visited my site today and have 2 camera cards full of Grizzly pics. I'm curious, should I move to a different area? I'm not concerned, but will blacks come in to site with grizz in the area?

saintsix 04-20-2012 09:23 PM

no the blacks wont compete with the grizz, id move. you might get a straggler but your camera will tell you better then me of what is still around :P

Some excellent information on those sites. I'll be testing my skills next time I'm in the bush. Also good info on the baitsite camera. I'd use as an excuse to clean up the site and abandon it. No use having an unneccessary confrontation with a Grizzly.

Someone posted a picture quioz link before. 15 pictures of bears, both black and grizzly and you had to determine which bear was in the picture. Was a good little quiz.

Here is a test from the Montana fish and wildlife government site. Hit the "Start training" hot link and work your way through it or go directly to testing. Not overly challenging but a little bit of a refresher with bear season here.

:snapoutofit:THE TEST FROM MONTANA , that test is a cool test but you can answer yes or no to the 2 questions is this a brown phase blk. bear , both answer's wrong , pretty stupid design 87% the best you can do , wow:angry3:oh ya for it to be a brown phase blk. bear it needs to be brown..the 2 bears are black black bears , but like I said both answer's are wrong...........montana:argue2:

MatthewP 07-29-2013 11:57 PM

Good test, I passed with 100%, And the both are chocolate phases of brown with the one being wet, making him darker... Good test
