Ice off

When do the lakes and ponds usually thaw, chomping at the bit to get out on the boat

Ice off

Depends on what part of AB, this area, maybe 2 weeks, depends on the wind.

The expression is 'champing at the bit'. I only point this out because I learned it from 30 Rock after saying 'chomping at the bit' for over 40 years (thanks Jack Donaghy). But I seriously digress...

Most of the lakes are closed to angling now until May 7 or May 16---stocked ponds are usually usually an exception.

In Edmonton area could be as early as mid-April to get on the trout potholes or closer to end of April. Last year was mid-April but not betting on that this year.
