Dog won’t eat

We have a Yorkie dog 13 years old that will not eat, drinks water is loosing weight several vet visits can not seem to find anything wrong. Seems to be in good health. Getting exspensive any suggestions?

Try feeding it some ground wild meat like deer or moose. The same thing happened to a neighbors dog. After a week of wild meat he started eating his kibble again.

Try feeding tripe. You can get it in a can at a pet food store. Open it up outside as the smell is hard to take. When my dog won't eat or is having stomach problems I always try the tripe first

Had the same issue with my 6 year old boxer last week was fine on Sunday and Wednesday was not eating, and was breathing hard and restless . Itook him into the vet Thursday and They found a growth near his small bowel and an enlarged heart by Friday we had to make the tough decision to let him go

Rice and chicken always worked good for our dogs when they felt ill. Cottage cheese works good to, both are easy on the stomach. Is your Yorkie drinking excessively? If so that's not a good sign and should let the vet know about that.

Sorry about your dog, 6 years is young. :(

My yorkie is 12 years old today

He refused to eat. I hand feed him. He will eat then

Get his teeth checked asap. If he has a sore tooth, he may stop eating. Mine did

dodger 09-13-2018 05:25 AM

It sounds like a sore tooth to me.

NOW - I am surprised by how many of us outdoor rough and tough's have Yorkies. Add me to the crowd :scared0018:

How's the pointing and retrieving going with the Yorkie crowd? :sHa_shakeshout:

Dodger.

We have two yorkies, 10 and 14 and a 4 year old Newfoundland. Some good suggestions above. Teeth could be an issue. We've been down that road more than once. Around $700 to get pulled assuming your dog could handle the anesthetic. Tough call.

I switched to soft food with my dog at age 13 when she started eating way less.. That lasted about 4-5 months and then she basicly stopped eating and lost a bunch of weight. After that she was getting senile and had to be put down. Never saw a vet. Knew it was time.

Try cooking up some white rice in low sodium chicken broth and mix in some cooked ground beef. When my 13 year old lab was too sick to want to eat for a few days, this got her appetite back. Good luck.

Dog won’t eat

It could also indicate an infection. My dog had an infection in her stomach when we wouldn’t eat. A few days of antibiotics and she began to eat again

A few years ago our dog (lab, shepherd mix) went on what could only be described as a hunger strike at about 8 years old. Had him checked out and he was totally healthy. The vet asked how long he had been on his current dog food.... I guess after 6 years of eating the same thing I'd go on strike, too. We switched from lamb/rice to alternating between beef and salmon as proteins and he's been eating regularly ever since. He's almost 13 now, and we're starting to mix more and more wet and fresh meat into the mix, along with glucosamine.

Big Grey Wolf 09-16-2018 09:32 AM

Our dogs will not eat most dry dog food brands unless we mix some table scraps, gravey etc in. They evolved from wolves that ate meat. After feeding moose and elk scraps/trim/bones hard to get them back on dry crap.

chicken liver, they seem to like it alot.

For an appetite check,
Go pick up one of these, tear it open, pour in 1 tsp warm water,
seal back up/shake..give piece to dog, should go nuts for it,
something def wrong if no interest !

After spending a good chunk of money and finding nothing wrong, now trying different advise from the posts on this site and trying different foods she is starting to eat. We will see in time if a variety of different foods from chicken to dog food steak ect is helping . Thanks for the advice.

Max took sick about a month ago, came out of nowhere,he was restless then he couldn't walk or lift his head or control his bowels. long story short we took him to the vet and they were not sure what was happening but gave us a broad spectrum antibiotic. while it he was taking the meds we fed him beef and chicken soup base through a syringe. which fluids, salts and some energy back to him. in the end the meds worked and he pulled through. hes 12-13 as well

I'm sorry for your loss.

I know only too well how painful it is to lose our furry friends.

Bigwoodsman 09-27-2018 11:19 AM

Condolences to you and your wife for the loss of your pup.

BW

pinelakeperch 09-27-2018 12:10 PM

I'm so sorry to hear that. I lost my best buddy in March and I still get a lump in my throat thinking about it. I've made a point of lending an ear to absolutely anyone who goes through losing their furry friend. Dogs are family.
