Hand guns no more wanted .

Buddy of mine has many handguns . Now that he is 75 he does not want them anymore and he did not know he can not sell them since last May of 2022.

So what does he do with them ?

Is there a government buy back ?

Scott N 07-16-2023 02:47 PM

There is no buy back on any firearms. Your buddy should hang on to them to see if there is a change of government in the next year or two, as there may be a possibility of selling them again at some point in the future. Currently his only option is to turn them in for destruction, with no compensation.

I do believe they can be exported south of the border and sold.

Put him in touch with Clay at Prophet River. Try all the major gun stores for that matter.

If Clay can't/won't take them into inventory, he may be able to facilitate the exportation to the US.

Prophet River doesn’t export. Borderview does, but I think you have to have a buyer in the US lined up - you’d have to check with them as that’s not usually the direction things travel.

The US isn’t short on guns and prices reflect that. Tough call at that age, waiting vs cashing out at low prices now.

As mentioned, the only way to sell is across border to USA. He will probably make out better doing so too, depending what he has, though it is a shame to have to export. When my time comes, all my handguns will go south to my daughter and her family as well.

Prophet River imported for me, I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction for export, even if they don't do it themselves.

If they're unique some firearms stores with ranges in-house are offering to buy them. They have the ability to buy for in-house ranges. Can't remember if it was TSE or CSC in Calgary had a posting on CGN looking to buy.

That's also an avenue, but from what I have seen they aren't offering too much for what you have. Why would they? There are now millions of handguns with a few dozen legal buyers in Canada. Better to export.

There is only one way to get the value out of them that he put into them.
Sell them to someone with no license.
If the government isn't going to stand by their side of the agreement, why should your friend?

huntinstuff 07-16-2023 08:16 PM

He should keep 2. The bigger the calibre the better

And he should have plenty of ammo for them too.

Scott N 07-17-2023 05:22 AM

If I recall, the cost of exporting is $300 + per firearm, so unless there are some unique, valuable firearms, it's probably not worth the cost and effort.

IRUNGUNS will export handguns for sale in the USA.

Executor

Make sure he reads up on what the executor of his Will can do.

He could also look at "lending" them to someone. There might be some loop holes there to use that would help him out until the Turd gets voted out.

Don't turn them in. No one is coming for them anytime soon.

Following this thought .....

If an American who currently owns firearms wishes to move permanently to Canada what would be the outcome of their handguns or OIC banned firearms?

Ebrand 07-17-2023 12:49 PM

Stay in US.

He cannot legally import.

If he wants to keep what Canada has “restricted” he needs to keep them in US. He can go and visit them. But cannot bring them here.

Vote properly. Convince everyone you know to vote properly.

If Turd (or Jughead) get in, they will be all over getting rid of every privately owned firearm in Canada as fast as they can.

A coworker did this years ago. Dual citizen. He had a pistol registered in both countries , every permit, i’s dotted and t’s crossed. Got to the border, nope. CBSA flat out refused to even look at any of it, just said no. Basically they didn’t care about the laws. Turned him around and I think he sold it to a gun store somewhere on the US side. He has been searched to the skin every border crossing since, despite never being charged let alone convicted of anything.

They can be transferred to an entity that has business license for restricted firearms.
A commercial business probably won't pay much. I suggest that he keep them as long as he can.
If he is stuck on getting rid of them There is a non profit training organization that can accept them. Please PM for information if all other options mentioned so far are not workable.
