Who's the best long distance shooter
There,, this thread should help out the "I want a flat shooter" thread.
|
Not me. Have never shot past 300m
|
I am, but I will never be able to confirm it.
|
Certainly not me. I enjoy the challenge but am realistic about my abilities.
Longest kill for me was 404 on a 2 year old Whitetail doe. Off of a back pack for an elbow rest and a bipod as a front rest laying prone. I do shoot quite often to 550 yards from the bench. I must say I am often humbled by trying to gauge winds that one would think insignificant. They frustrate the crap out of me. Lol |
I have made what would consider to be astounding shots on various targets at various distances. And couldn't repeat a single one.
for the most part, I have trouble making one shot/ one hole groups. . As they say on dragons den.... So for that reason, I'm out. |
I never shoot past 500 meters, so it isn't me.
|
They haven't shown up here yet :)
Personally my furthest hunting shot is 390 yards, closest 14yards....the close one was more exciting than the long one. Best grouping at distance 1.312 inches at 500yards....shot prone off a bipod, hunting rifle and hand loads. I can't hold a candle to some of the guys here....or at least some of the claims. LC |
This would be sweet to try out at that new range by Edson. They built a 1600 yard range? Would be nice to make the drive out there when work permits it.
Otherwise, 530 yards is the furthest for me. I wouldn't consider it long range, compared to some of the dudes on t.v. I see daily. |

All I can say is, be patient, you'll get closer next time. |
I'm a average shooter and am comfortable shooting to 350. Past that it becomes more luck then skill for me. What comes to mind is a good shot can be consistent in hitting the target at his/her comfort range.

I am...:scared0018::scared0018:

Quigley down under, duh....
|
Some dude was bragging about making 500 yard offhand shots to Lefty the other day. Sounds like he is the best shot in the world.

Longest Shot
I thought Levon Helm told us that it was Bob Lee Swagger. " The Shooter " Mark Wahlberg. One of the best movies ever.
|
I have made 2 450 yards shots on coyotes using the annetnna whip as a rest:sHa_sarcasticlol: . Killed both. 500 yards on paper to try out my Burris eliminater . I've heard plenty guys shoot to 600 and hold on fur. So it's not me. As far has movies. There's a new sniper movie coming out about Chris Kyle I'm thinking it will be sweet.
|
I will say I personally witnessed Normanrd shoot a gopher with his 220swift at exactly a 1/4 mile....440yards confirmed kill, prone off a bipod.

Another good contender for the title might be Carlos Hathcock. The link below makes for very interesting reading.

Good call on hathcock. I've researched him lots. A really really good book about him is : marine sniper. Check it out
He was the case study after nam about creating a sniper trade in the Murican military. Dusted Vietcong with an 8x scope on a 50 at 2500 yards , used his model 70 to 1200 yards, went on movie type single sniper missions and with great success, won Wimbledon in 1963 or so , still has the record for some type of off hand shooting - like 246 out of 250 points or so. Shot a enemy sniper thru his rifle scope (pu soviet model so it's believable). Lots more , just crazy. Scary how good he was with a 1-2 Moa rifle and it only shot it's first shot accurately ( in nam ) Bob lee swagger was based loosely off him even though there's a reference to hathcock separately in point of impact I have a interview on DVD by john plaster of hathcock. Wow scary dangerous eyes to say the least. They really stuck out. A very dangerous man with a rifle. |
Most guys who are really good at anything aren't the ones bragging about it.

Are we talking AO members or anybody out there??
I have seen a member here lay down over a log and put three into less than 1 MOA at 1000 meters with an unbraked 338 Lapua- holding Kentucky windage no less!!:sign0068: I have also witnessed a 14 year old kid ( with the help of an excellent wind doper- both of them AO members ) hit three clays at 500 prone , in a hellish wind with a .223- in a match! I've watched as a AO member shot a Lithgow prone with one zeroing shot with the open sights at 1,000 meters, and with a slight adjustment, dropped the next one right into 2MOA - open sights. The first time I ever shot a long range rifle with sling 'n' irons I shot three magpies in a row - shooting a magpie at that range is easy, I used to watch the good shooters do it quite often in the wind:medium-smiley-035: Cat |

According to all the fantastic 1 shot, 25 yard groups Ive been getting, I must be the best long range shooter!
Just kidding :) Im hosting a long range shoot for some friends and officers down here in the Hat come February. 300, 500, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 Ill let ya know if I can hit anything but the ground at those longer ranges! |

I have no long range shooting experience but have stayed at a Holiday Inn, and googled some results from the International Benchrest Shooters Association ... It looks like among their 1000 yd results, the top ten shooters are holding "about" 1/2 MOA (sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less - depending on "conditions"). If my math is correct, this means both the shooter and equipment needs to be able to consistently shoot under 1/2 MOA at shorter distances in order to even have the POTENTIAL to run with the IBRSA big dogs.
