This is so neat. Turns out this fellow found his roots. Amazingly it was from his Mom's side. How would you like to find out your Mother's roots go back 9000 years and you only live a half mile away from where your relatives were 300 generations before?

I'd say if anyone is entitled to indigenous rights this man qualifies.

What the article link does NOT mention, is that the man whose DNA matches, was a primary school teacher in Cheddar , and he had his students donate DNA samples for an experiment to learn about DNA , ancestry, etc. as part of their studies.
he also donated a sample, and that is when it was found that his DNA matched the Cheddar man's DNA!:)

It's free for the two weeks, but your card is charged as soon as the two week period is over. Your card won't be charged, so long as you cancel before the two week mark.

Thanks to Ancestory.ca and DNA testing we traced ours back about twice that far.
It's not that big a deal.

I'm on the same page with the DNA registries, while there is a certain novelty factor that I won't deny has some appeal, the potential downside is so bad that it’s hard to comprehend how many people throw caution to the wind and register.

If people consider that when you register for DNA databanks you are not just risking your own privacy, you’re volunteering it away for everyone down the genetic chain from you, including those who will be born long after you’ve died. A bit much there perhaps?

Take for example what will happen when insurance companies get their paws into such data, no medical coverage for your great great grandchild because of that family history of cancer or whatever.

You’re even registering your siblings indirectly when you do these things. One of my half-sisters did.

I’m hopeful that geneticists can make great strides in tweaking out little genetic anomolies and hereditary diseases as time progresses, but I really can’t personally justify the risk versus the mere novelty reward in registering for one of those banks.

Those ‘services’ are much like Facebook in that they sell your data to any company with the cash, supposedly ‘cleansing’ it of your actual identity. I read a mainstream article on them and one fellow was rather easily able to determine a persons identity based on the information that was provided sans name.

Genealogy is a double edged sword
 

Sounds good. Right up to the part where a family is identified as being genetically predisposed to certain diseases, and insurance companies deny coverage to immediate family members and their descendants. Possibly extending specific insurance restrictions to entire bloodlines.

At least one forum member is well aware of this fact, and the underlying cause for concern.

If you want to know your roots or ancestry, you don't hafta waste time going to libraries or research websites or nothing; or pay money to genealogists or anyone else.

Just run for some Public Office then sit back and relax, and your enemies will do it all for you......:thinking-006:
