I enjoy my 257 WBY as it drives tacks out a long ways. It amazing how accurate it can be 300-400 yards out when conditions are good - but there is some moderate recoil - and it's pricey to shoot. Less punishing compared to the 300 WBY but just as accurate and long. I also enjoy my good old 308 win in an older Remington 700BDL - it's never let me down, accurate, low recoil and fun to experiment at longer ranges as she is very predicable shooting a 150gr BT. Maybe it's my 22 - that's always fun and cheap to shoot. Set up all sorts of experimental shooting drills and games .... Maybe all of them !!!! |
9.3x62 just because bigger is always more fun
|
6.5's and 7's
And 6.5x57 |
7mm rem mag, huge selection of high quality projectiles and powders to reload with, super accurate, high bc's good for any animal, that's my opinion anyway. There are so many good options these days pick what you know and are comfortable with, the more you shoot the better you will shoot.

6.5X55 Swede , I have owned and dozens dozens of centre fire cartridges in many, many different calibers and rifles ,
But for shooting pleasure and dependability for most target shooting, varminting and big game hunting, I consider the 120 year old 6.5 Swede the most versatile of all, :) |

I have probably killed as many animals with the '06 as any, but for the "fun" factor, I agree; bigger is better!!
This last year was the 577/500 no.2. A cast,360 gr paper-patched bullet, using blackpowder, and the recoil of a 30-06 in a double rifle. YEAH baby! My 470 NE is fun, but not for too long. |
I love the 45-70 for a lot of reasons. One of which is I'm too cheap to get a proper spotting scope. Those big holes are easy to see.
I haven't had a 30-30 in years and I've missed it. I bought a .308 ruger gsr a couple of years ago and it has proven to be an accurate and enjoyable combination but still... last week I found a new marlin 336 that is proof that remlin is no longer a 4 letter word. I'm back on board with the 30-30. I also like the .44 magnum and the .444. A .357 magnum can waste a lot of pop cans in short order. I guess the majority of my favourites are rimmed cartridges. Not sure why. Colin |
22lr. It's as accurate as the gun and shooter. Uber quiet, zero recoil, cheap to shoot, and no reloading when you go home :)

Of the rifles I now own my .50 caliber Hawken is by far the most fun at the range. |
The 44 mag.
|
For just shooting, 223. Center fire trajectory with no recoil and little noise. Especially in a semiauto. Not into mag dumps but fun keeping eye Your eye on the target and plinking away.
For everything else, 7 mm Rem mag. Once I get handloading, I could probably make it my one gun for everything. |
Really love my 45-70. Have only just started tinkering with loads but I can take anything from coyotes to bears with it and everything in between. Super fun to shoot out of my Marlin 1895. Something about a lever...

Was 54 Cal Black Powder. Would be again if I could find one again.:)

I'd have to go with the 7mm-08. Just a perfect all round hunting rig for me.

The .44 Magnum here as well. From a rifle.

280 rem is my current favourite but I'm hoping the new 6.5-284 I'm having built changes my mind though.
|
22-250 for anything wolf size & under.
7 mag for everything else. And the ballistics of these two are very similar out to 500 yards, making the 22-250 a good 'practice' rig for the 7mm. Both are fast, flat & accurate. |

I would have to say 12 gauge. Nothing like breaking clays at the 27 yard line. I also love the challenge of shooting skeet with .22 bird shot. From stations 1,7,8. Never really hit alot but it was fun trying:sHa_shakeshout:
