Camp Wainwright deer

Are people actually pulling bigger deer out of Camp Wainwright in the primitive weapon season rather than the other weeks? I have priority 10 and wondering if it’s worth putting it in for the early draw?

I haven’t seen photos of big deer there for awhile. The muzzleloader draw is fun if you like hunting close up. If you don’t understand the tricks to get close you might be disappointed. It stands to reason that the first season might be more productive of big deer.

That’s why I’m asking. I can blast deer anywhere with the muzzleloader. If there aren’t any wall hangers, do I put it in the last three days of November.

Grasshopper....no one can guarantee you a big trophy, every deer must be a trophy in your mind. Not because of the deer but because of the hunt.

If you have never been there before ,go a few months early and get on the base when they are open for bird game hunting
They have an area that is a walk in only . This is where you want to go for a big deer .In the morning briefing you get every day, they will tell which area are open for the day and which are closed. So every morning 50 trucks will be bumper to bumper down the road . not fun ! I have only seen big deer come out of the walk in zone.

This is just my opinion but if I was looking for a wall hanger I would not be thinking Wainwright because of the access issues limiting scouting time. You also have a very limited amount of days to hunt. I would still like to hunt wainwright as a family hunt though not a trophy hunt

Like I said just my opinion but I am a firm believer that scouting is the number one factor for hunting big animals followed by time out there hunting.

Saw a couple good bucks come out this year that were pretty impressive. Also had one solid MD go past us while we were moose hunting.

Its not a spot that's loaded with giants but sure has the potential to find a great buck, and overall I think guys hunt it because they enjoy the experience of the hunt out there. I know I love catching up with several guys there whenever I can.

Friend took a pretty good typical out of there a couple years ago. Might even be in top 5 in Alberta....:)

Which one? whitetail or mulie?

marky_mark 02-17-2020 09:45 AM

If youve never been to wainwright or dont go often
Dont have high expectations
Its not your typical hunt

Ghenn96 02-17-2020 10:32 AM

there are some big deer in the Base, I have seen a couple 200+ Mulies, But they have been in No-go zones hovering the border of those zones, they know where they are safe. But on the Small chance you get them to leave, you could come out with a Book Deer.

There are big deer on the base, but some never leave the permanentally closed areas, and there are also daily closures to deal with. As well the deer can enter and leave the base at will with the hunting pressure or military activity.

in 2017 there was a 205" mule deer pulled out

the success rate is higher in primitive weapons and 1st rifle some hunts

chased in during hunting season n out during base hunt sometimes

here is a first rifle buck

always enjoy base hunts

David:)

About as good a chance at a trophy class animal as most WMUs. No better, no worse.

dustinjoels 02-17-2020 05:44 PM

Although in wainwright a lot of trophy success is luck dependant since you can’t scout.

I’ve only hunted there once...I really enjoyed it and I shot a nice whitetail buck.

Hunted

I hunted it this past muzzle loader season, and although we hunted hard every day, the buggest deer we saw was a 145” whitetail and Maybe a 155” mule deer.
Its not like it was before the bad winter kills.
