Sako 85 Laminated S/S (Grey Wolf ) 300 Win Mag
 

Inquiring for my son . Those of you that may have this rifle in this caliper can you add a muzzle brake to the barrel . If you load your ammo what components do you prefer . Make of Brass , Make & type of Primers , Make of Powder, type & preferred weight . Bullet weight & type . He is thinking about 190 Gr. Accubond Long Range . Any suggestion or recommendations welcome . Thanks

Ya you can take it to a gunsmith and get it threaded for a brake

Lapua makes brass for the 300 win now so that is the stuff to get

Lately ive used 200 gr a frames and 215 gr bergers with mine

Bergers for long range and nothing in north america is stopping the a frames

Sako 75 Finnlight in 300 Win Mag I am shooting for the last 10 -11 years as my primary rifle. Different brass, once I shot 5 shots at 100 y in .626 inch I was done with development ( around 2012 ).
Federal 215 GM primers, IMR 4350 70 gr of powder with 180 gr Barnes TTSX for hunting, and 180 Hornady SST for plinking.( Start at least 10% lower)
No lead in my venison for the last 20 y or so.
This gun was a second-hand gun, came with a brake that was the laudest I ever used and I will never use it again.

I've got Sako S20 and got a factory Sako muzzle brake which is nice but does not fit my Finnlight.
Finnlight barrel is of smaller diameter.

BTW last season at Suffield I've shot Elk Cow at 538 y. Not bragging just an accurate gun lots of practice Good rangefinder and excellent Swarovski 5-25
scope with Ballistic Tip turret, Bipod, prone.I would not shoot beyond this
range.

The 85 in a laminate stock has a fair bit of weight to it so it really migrates the recoil. Try it with some different loads before going for a brake. I had the same rifle and the recoil was mild. I never bothered reloading for it as the Federal Powershocks were amazingly accurate and did a great job on game.

Had my Sako 75 SS 300 WM since new (1997). Bought it at Corlanes. They installed a threaded muzzle brake. Shot factory ammo for a few years (Winchester Supreme Partition Golds then the Accubonds-both 180gr) until I started reloading in 2005.

Winchester Supreme nickle-plated cases and Nosler brass. Use Federal GM 215 primers. 74.5gr of RL-22 with 180gr Accubonds gives me great performance and groups. Still my main rifle to this day. Set up for 3.5" high at 100m.

One side of me wishes I didnt do the muzzle brake as its loud, but it shoots great. Not that I needed the muzzle brake being a larger guy. Kind of got talked into it by another guy that had his done on a Sako m75 rifle in 300WM.

How’s the recoil in that finlight in a .300wm?

I don't think it's a light enough rifle to have to worry much. Scoped and loaded it'd be close to 8 1/2 lbs.

Don’t have the rifle combo you mention but I’m sure yours will shoot just fine. 300WM is an accurate round.

I bought this rifle last year used, and when I disassembled it, there were a few areas in the bedding areas that showed it was rubbing, so I relieved those areas and bedded the action and free floated the barrel.

The very first three shots I shot out of it were 150gr Speer w/73gr IMR4831 and they grouped an amazing .3” c to c. Another is 180gr Match King that shot best with 74.5gr of IMR7828 at just over .5” c to c. But I don’t recommend that load as it’s .5gr above book max and shows pressure in my gun. Both of those loads I used .04” bullet jump to the lands.

I use whatever brass I can get my hands on and prep carefully and thoroughly. Weight sort to within 5% diff highest to lowest. And deburr flash holes.

I got a Witt Machine clamp on brake, don’t remember what I paid for it, but their service was good and the brake works well. No muzzle jump with this model cuz of the upward facing ports.
