Bump Gauge

There seems to have been a few threads lately that have brought to the forefront why a bump gauge might be a good idea. Or at least help with some answers.

I just started loading for a round that none of my current inserts will work with. I could order a new one, they are relatively inexpensive, but $10 USD soon eats a $50 bill pretty quickly with shipping etc. So to save time and money, I did this. This is certainly not a new idea I’m sure, but it seems to give a pretty accurate reading.

A 44 mag case works well too.

Put the cut casing over the neck, measure OAL, run normal case through FL die to bump shoulder back, out cut casing over it again and measure OAL to get the amount the shoulder set back?

Correct.

Hey fantastic idea. I have used a pipe cutter to cut cases before but never thought of making bump gauge from them.

The right size pistol case, 9mm, 40, 45 etc to fit onto the neck properly is probably the easiest version of this but if you don't have access to pistol brass then Chuck's system works good too. Just use the right size case so that it sits on the Datum line, roughly 1/3rd of the way down the shoulder. The black line on the shoulder in the picture below, designating where to measure head space, is the Datum line.
