Jasper in January

Hey, I'm going to Jasper at the end of the month and was told there is still lots of open water to be found on the Athabasca. As I am fairly new to flyfishing and not very good i was hoping someone could give me some insight as to strategy, and fly choice. I know to look for the deepest slowest pools i can at this time of year, but other than that i am nearly clueless. Any info will help, thanks very much!

You'll be fishing for bull trout, yeah deepest spot you can find use medium sized streamers and nymphs bigger nyphms , I've never fly fished for them in the winter but I would think the action will be really slow. Don't worry if you don't catch any just happy you can get a couple false casts In while everyone else is dreaming of doing so .

If you look in last Saturday's paper Neil Waugh caught a hog from the athab nice little write up I have a feeling this is why may have prompted ur curiosity ;)

I have fished the Atha a few times in the winter and there are fish to be found, just very few and far between. As mentioned streamers and nymphs should be your go to and get them down to the bottom of those deep holes.

There's usually open water from Becker' chalet downstream. Fish the deeper/slower stuff. Heavily weighted streamer (white has worked for me) just off the bottom. Watch out for ice shelves...

I was just fishing the athabaca last weekend and didn't have any luck myself but a local told me the bull tout and whitefish and pretty good you just need to find deep holes and use something that can get to the bottom fast.

Do you have personalized plates and a retriever fishing with you? I think I saw you near 6B a few times while walking my dog.

I was fishing 6b but didn't have a retrieve with me. Must have been someone else.
