I have an MRI booked for October. They found a nodule on my liver about 6 years ago. It wasn't cancer but they weren't real sure what it was so I get an ultrasound every 2 years to make sure it hasn't grown. My doctor retired and the new one wants to make sure, my blood test might have shown something because they booked the MRI. We had a dog for 16 1/2 years who liked to eat gophers, squirrels etc.
I reckon the stress caused by 4 years of NDP could weaken an immune system enough :angry3: :sign0176:.

I shouldn't blame the dog. My research shows that you can get it from one of my favorite pastimes while hunting, picking and eating berries (without washing them). Blueberries maybe, or even the strawberries in the garden perhaps.

Wouldn’t it be most likely you picked it up handling coyotes dugh?

We're pretty careful, especially with coyotes. The first thing the specialist asked was do we have a dog. Her favorite thing was catching and eating gophers and any squirrels we shot around the cabin.

I wander how many trapper will stop trapping canine because of this. Maybe it's time for a large scale poisoning, like they did in the 50's?

Thanks for posting. I get my blood tested every year but I’ll make sure to ask my Doctor to check off the box on the lab request to include checking for antibodies if he’s not already doing it. It beats the alternative.

They have had this south of border for ever without mass infections in humans. Wear gloves, keep your hands away from your face. Take your gloves off to smoke, drink.

I just got back from doctor's office. Test is very far from straight forward. After 3 hrs waiting on exactly what was needed as far as testing for these antibodies in regards to this particular parasite both my son & I had blood samples taken that will be sent to a special lab in Toronto to be tested. As well, doc also requested ultrasounds for both of us on liver to ensure no cysts present. Results from blood sample will take about one week. I was also in contact with my vet to have my dogs checked & the only way for pets is an ultrasound which will detect cysts on liver. Both of my dogs are being de-wormed & one will get the ultrasound. To my surprise my vet knew a far bit about this (far more than the healthcare center or me) & has been to two conferences that covered information on it. She informed me that in canines there have been no cases as far as she knows north of Rimbey area. These measures seem extreme to me, but rather be safe than sorry.

Ya, we are all supposed to get Hydatid disease, but i dont know a soul out there that is packing it. It mustnt be horribly contagious to us. Watch some of these hard core types and theyll peel a fresh hot, poopy coyote and then eat a sandwich with unwashed hands. The next nut job running around picking up poop for his trap sets and again... sandwich time! YUCK

I dont wear rubber gloves, never have much, too slippery, would be like greasing up a pig and then chase it around and try to catch it.

But i did get checked this year... all these horrible, unsettling news headlines. 2nd time i got checked in 27 years. I heard about the echinococcus worm and hydatids disease from Mr Ogorman. I dewormed that year and never again, although im always gonna do it.

Funny doctor told me to buy vermox ovee the counter. I actually even tried to buy it but pharmacist girlie chased me away telling me i can only get it by prescription. Worms is a touchy subject. Anybody have a good brand to try? No home remedies or naturopath stuff please... i want the good stuff regardless!!! H

Some basic advice:
-wear rubber gloves when skinning if you can stand them
-Wash hands with powerful soap like ultra dawn when skinning
-Dont touch your face with unwashed hands. Wouldnt hurt to scrub fingernails regularly if you arent into rubber gloves. I scrub with hydrogen peroxide often
-wear doctors mask when skinning
-wear dust mask when brushing
-deworm twice a season, mid and a month after end
-may be a good idea to be extra careful with warm animals

And stop people you know from letting their dawgs lick their faces, especially on the mouth. (Some folks are disgusting!!!)

Will let you know what kind of deworm pills to use regularly once i know. Anybody know that one?
